Answer first
The earthquakes changed one thing for buyers: structural condition is now the first check, and a listing cannot answer it. Damage is reported as concentrated in the coastal zone north of Caracas, with strong shaking along the Valencia to Caracas corridor, but the safe answer is building by building, not region by region.
This page reports what named sources say and marks what is provisional. It is not an engineering assessment, and the market descriptions elsewhere on this site, written before 24 June 2026, are being re-verified.
What is reported
Two shallow earthquakes within a minute
On 24 June 2026 a magnitude 7.2 earthquake was followed about 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5, near Yumare, west of Caracas. Both were shallow, at roughly 11.5 km and 23.5 km depth.

The rupture ran toward Caracas
The larger event ruptured some 200 km eastward along the plate boundary toward the capital, which produced strong ground motion along that corridor.

Damage concentrated on the coast north of Caracas
Severe damage is reported in a roughly 40 km coastal zone north of Caracas, including La Guaira and Catia La Mar. Shaking also extended along the Valencia to Caracas corridor.

Hundreds of thousands in the strongest shaking
About 590,000 people are estimated to have been in zones of severe to violent shaking, 4.8 million in strong shaking, and more than 16 million within the overall footprint.

The building type matters
Engineering reconnaissance describes low-rise, non-engineered reinforced-concrete frame buildings with hollow clay tile infill walls, with damage from column failures, excessive drift and collapse of infill walls.

Aftershocks and provisional figures
A total of 138 aftershocks were recorded between 24 and 26 June. Satellite analysis suggested roughly 58,870 buildings damaged or destroyed, and the same source calls these figures provisional.

Seven checks before a deposit
- 1Ask for a structural assessment by a local engineer dated after 24 June 2026, for the specific building, not the district.
- 2Find out what the building is made of. Non-engineered concrete-frame buildings with masonry infill are the type described as vulnerable.
- 3Ask whether the condominium has repair works, special levies or disputes outstanding, and get the board records in writing.
- 4Ask whether the property is insured and what the policy covers. Insurance penetration is reported as low, so assume nothing is covered until you see a policy.
- 5For hillside property, ask about slope stability and landslide exposure. USGS has published landslide hazard information for this earthquake sequence.
- 6Check utilities and access: water, electricity, and the road you would use to reach the property.
- 7Confirm title and registry status as for any purchase. A damaged building can still be sold, so condition and title are separate checks.
Earthquake FAQ for buyers
Is it safe to buy property in Venezuela after the 2026 earthquakes?
It depends on the building and the location, not on the country as a whole. Damage is reported as concentrated in the coastal zone north of Caracas, with strong shaking along the Valencia to Caracas corridor. Any property in an affected area needs an engineer's assessment dated after 24 June 2026 before a deposit.
Which parts of Venezuela were affected by the June 2026 earthquakes?
Reports describe severe damage in the coastal area north of Caracas, including La Guaira and Catia La Mar, and strong shaking toward Valencia and Caracas. Regions further east and south were farther from the rupture, but that does not replace checking the specific building.
Are earthquake-damaged properties for sale in Venezuela?
Some properties are on the market because of the earthquakes. Some are sound and priced low because the owner left, and some are damaged in ways a photograph does not show. The two cannot be told apart from a listing, so an assessment is needed.
How many people died in the Venezuela earthquakes?
Casualty and damage figures differ between sources and were still being revised when this page was written, so we do not quote a number. Check current figures from official and humanitarian sources.
